Surrey Police are asking people to keep their bags and purses in sight after a number of purse dipping incidents in supermarkets in the past week.
The police received six reports relating to thefts of purses from bags in Cobham, Esher and Weybridge.
None of the victims remember being approached or distracted at any point during their shop, and only found their purses stolen on going to pay for items.
Five of the six victims were pensioners.
David Hollingsworth, Elmbridge neighbourhood inspector, said: “We would urge members of the public to be vigilant and make sure to keep their bags and purses on their person at all times when shopping.
“It appears that the thieves may be targeting elderly shoppers so I would urge people to also make their elderly relatives, friends and neighbours aware of these incidents.
“If you think you have been a victim of purse dipping or have witnessed anything that has aroused your suspicion then please call Surrey Police on 101.”
