Walton Casuals boss Danny Carroll is hoping waiting a long time to win a football match at home is like waiting a long time for a bus – three come along at once.
A Mu Mann double ensured the Stags ended their seven month wait for a Ryman Division One South league win as they beat Horsham 3-1 at Waterside Drive on Tuesday night.
The struggling Stags remain second from bottom in the table, but are now only two points adrift of third-bottom Corinthian Casuals.
Tuesday’s result – which followed Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Eastbourne Town – was timely given bottom club Three Bridges have strengthened their squad in recent weeks as they shape up for the relegation scrap.
And Carroll, who can finally wave away questions surrounding their unwanted home record, is hoping a few more come sooner rather than later.
“We’ve not mentioned our home record in the dressing room because we do not want to put any more pressure on the boys,” he said ahead of Saturday’s trip to high-flying Leatherhead.
“We’ve picked up hugely in the last few weeks. We are playing well, but we have just been giving away sloppy goals.
“We were brilliant on Tuesday and should have scored more. It is a relief to get that win out of the way because at least it will stop me being asked about it.
“If we get one win at home I think we will get three or four before the end of the season. Hopefully it will be a bit like waiting for a bus.
“I want to get four wins as quickly as possible.
“If we do that we won’t be second from bottom and will be very close to safety.
“Three Bridges are improving all the time, so we cannot relax.”
Mann was the difference between the two teams on Tuesday and he will be looking to continue his good form when the Stags travel to one of his former clubs tomorrow.
And Carroll admitted there was a lot more riding on the game and Tuesday’s visit of Chipstead, than simply three points.
“I think half of our team – like Mu and Greg Andrews – used to play for Leatherhead, while our entire back four have been at Chipstead,” he added.
“I was at Chipstead too so there is a lot of feeling in these next two games.”
