Dog owners will be able to get their pet pooch microchipped for free this month.
From April 2016, dog owners will face a fine of £500 if they do not microchip their dog in a bid to cut the number of strays.
The size of a grain of rice, microchips are painlessly fitted under the skin between the dog's shoulder blades allowing vets, councils and charities to trace its owner if it is thought to be a stray.
Merton Priory Homes has teamed up with the Dogs Trust to provide free microchipping at an event next week.
Wayne Hemsworth, managing director at Merton Priory Homes, said “We want to help local dog lovers protect their pet and prove that they are responsible owners before these new laws are introduced in 2016.
“By teaming up with Dogs Trust for this event we’re not only able to provide a free microchipping service but will also offer important guidance on keeping your pet happy and healthy at home”.
Representatives from Dogs Trust will be offering advice on keeping your dog healthy, neutering vouchers and dog agility exercises at the event.
The team will be at their base in Sadler Close, Mitcham CR4 3EG on Tuesday, February 26, between 11am and 3pm.
