I read with interest the letter from John Hansworth (Please sort out potholes, February 14).
As a result of the recent cold weather, road surfaces across the borough have suffered damage. Potholes are caused because, in the normal course of things, water seeps into the road. But when this water is frozen and turned to ice it expands, which breaks up the surface of the road.
Consequently, Wandsworth Council is having to put extra resources both into both repairing potholes and resurfacing roads. However, it will take a number of weeks to repair the whole borough. In the case of Nightingale Lane, which Mr Hansworth mentions, work is due to start on resurfacing in April.
