An antiques dealer and his girlfriend were on board a hot-air balloon which caught alight killing 19 tourists in Egypt.

Joe Bampton, 40, and partner Suzanna Gyetvai, 34, who lived in a flat in Venn Street, Clapham, were among 20 passengers on the balloon which crashed in Luxor on Tuesday.

The pair worked together at Lots Road Auctions in Chelsea, where Mr Bampton was an expert valuer in rugs and carpets.

Mr Bampton studied art at the Slade School of Fine Art with his work exhibited in Berlin, and moved to London from Liverpool.

The couple were among the 19 dead following the accident, with a fourth Britain and the pilot believed to be the only survivors.

A spokesman from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We can confirm the tragic deaths of two British Nationals and one British resident following a hot air balloon crash in Luxor, Egypt earlier today.

"The next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them and their families at this difficult time.

"We are providing them with consular assistance. We can also confirm that one other British National was involved and is in a stable condition."

The hot air balloon was taking in the sights of Egypt's Valley of the Kings when it set on fire this morning and crashed.

It is thought a hose attached to gas tanks was cut by workers when they were trying to land the balloon, leading to the explosion.
