A homeless man forced to sleep rough outside his former home has finally got a roof over his head.
Leslie Hillsley, 53, was evicted from Connor Court, Alfreda Street, Battersea, following the death of his mother and brother.
He had been living in the alleyway outside the property since January 31 after Wandsworth Council ordered he could no longer live there.
After his plight was highlighted in the Wandsworth Guardian a generous neighbour has come forward to help him out.
Paul Lynch, 41, whose girlfriend lived in the same corridor, offered his help and went to speak to the council on Mr Hillsley behalf.
The personal trainer, of Culverden Road, Balham, took time out of his work schedule to negotiate with the council housing department.
After a lengthy four days of paperwork he was able to find a place for him in Stanthorpe Hotel, Stanthorpe Road, Streatham.
Mr Lynch said: "I saw him lying on his side. He lies flat on the ground trying to snuggle up and get heat.
"Eventually I said I would go down and speak to the council on his behalf. By the fourth day I was stressed out with it.
"We got a place in Streatham, like a half way house. It is the first time I have seen Lesley Hillsley smile - he said I have friends in Streatham."
In March last year Mr Hillsley's brother suddenly died of cancer aged 55, with the former bookmaker remaining in the family home.
When he went to register the death he was told he would have to move out and could not transfer it into his name.
He said: "It is nice, it is very nice. I have got a roof, things that I want, tables, a toilet just outside my door.
"My mate brought me a telly, I have got home comforts. I'm glad it's all over as such."
