Croydon Council has confirmed the appointment of Nathan Elvery as interim chief executive.
Mr Elvery, 43, was approved by Full Council on Monday and will take over from outgoing chief executive Jon Rouse, who leaves the council on March 10.
The interim position is for an initial period of up to 12 months.
Mr Elvery joined the council as director of finance and resources in 2004 and became deputy chief executive and executive director of corporate resources and customers services in 2008.
Council leader Mike Fisher said: "The next 12 months will be a very challenging time for the authority and Nathan’s long experience in local government combined with his knowledge of the borough and his ability to work effectively with our partners makes him the ideal person for the job."
