I am pleased plans are moving ahead to install the so-called Boris bikes at Clapham Junction.
However, Wandsworth Council should only grant planning permission with one important condition – that all reference to Barclays Bank be removed. I find it disgraceful our council is paying £2m to be part of the cycle network when Barclays is not paying a penny.
I bet most people do not even remember that London Mayor Boris Johnson gave this sponsorship to a bank without inviting bids from other companies.
Maybe if he had, the taxpayer would be getting more than a paltry £5m, while Barclays get a massive amount of advertising – probably worth four times as much.
So instead of making us in Wandsworth continue to subsidise a multinational bank’s continued march towards world dominance – let us take back the cycle hire scheme for ourselves and get rid of all Barclays branding.
