This week has been about check-ups at the doctors, visits to the hospital and a poorly child.

It started off so well – a developmental meeting with the health visitor for Elijah (she thinks he’ll be a child genius – Phew!) and a trip to the baby show.

I think all the excitement must have worn the little man out because by the time we got to Sunday, he was looking drawn and lethargic – yes, he had caught the dreaded lurgy.

Now, as we all know, us mothers like to protect our little ones from all disease and pestilence, but there comes a time when we have little or no control over the situation.

We have been so lucky (touch wood) as my son has never really been ill, apart from a slight reaction after his jabs, so having three nights of broken sleep has been exhausting and I feel for all those parents who have to deal with it on a regular basis.

It also has a knock on effect – grumpy dad with a sore head who is now on the Lemsip night capsules.

With all this fun and games going on, there has still been time for it to finally sink in that we will be welcoming another little one into the family soon.

We listened to the baby’s heartbeat during this week’s visit to the doctors and I found out my blood pressure was still stable, even after all the dramas over the last seven days.

Elijah was a little bemused seeing the doctor prod my ever increasing belly and it is funny to think it was him being prodded a year or so earlier.

So to sum up, it is all about home-cooked food, snuggling up inside to keep warm and raising a glass of orange juice to the NHS.
