Tennis champ Tim Henman paid a visit to Mitcham this week to teach schoolchildren a thing or two about his sport.

The former British No 1 was at Gorringe Park Primary School in Sandy Lane on Wednesday to give pupils a coaching session as part of the Wimbledon Junior Tennis Initiative organised by the Merton School Sport Partnership and the All England Tennis Club.

Since 2002 every primary school in Merton has been offered the chance to take part in tennis fun days run by Dan Bloxham, head coach of the All England Club, and his team.

The scheme has seen more than 135,000 children experience tennis over the past 11 years, with some talented youngsters receiving further coaching at the All England Club.

 Councillor Martin Whelton, cabinet member for education, said: "I'm delighted that one of our most successful tennis players in Britain, Tim Henman has visited Gorringe Park and inspired pupils to take up tennis.

"Through the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club working with Merton schools, it has given young people a great opportunity to learn and develop their skills in tennis through the Wimbledon Junior Tennis Initiative.

"Keeping active from a young age is very important and I commend the Merton School Sports Partnership for their innovative approach in organising these 'Fundays', but for also teaching sports to our children."
