Croydon Council has turned its back on plans to outsource its CCTV surveillence to a private firm.

The authority was proposing to scrap its in-house CCTV control room, which is staffed by 15 people, to save £100,000 over the next two years.

But councillors have now concluded an external provider would not be able to provide a sufficient level of service for less money.

Councillor Simon Hoar, cabinet member for community safety and public protection, said: "Having gone through a market testing exercise to explore what an outsourced service would cost and deliver the council were not satisfied that an external provider would meet its needs.

"It has therefore been agreed that the CCTV control room team will remain under the management of the council and there outsourcing process has been terminated."
