A tantalising play from legendary French playwright Georges Feydeau has been adapted for an English audience by two Richmond residents.

Faydeau was a French playwright who, over a century ago, was delighting audiences with his fluffed-up comedic nonsense concerning the priapic pretensions and indiscretions of the haut-ish Parisian bourgeoisie.

One of Feydeau's pieces Le Tailleur des Dames has been translated and adapted for the stage by David King and Rodney Figaro, under the English title Designs on Ladies.

Mr King says: “I think it’s a great play. I have been greatly aided by Rodney Figaro who put a frothy edge to my translation and added the crème Chantilly to this delightful play.

“Georges Feydeau was one of the most prolific dramatists at the end of the 19th century and the early 20th century.

"He was the quintessential exponent of the Belle Epoque writer of farces.

“He wrote his first comic monologue at the age of 20, after several one act farces he found success in 1889 with the play which is being performed at present-Tailleur pour Dames (literally Ladies’ Tailor) in our version Designs on Ladies , an excellent pun thought up by Peter Parkinson.”

The play is directed by Maxina Cornwell and boasts a cast from some of Richmond Shakespeare Society’s finest.
