Campaigners calling for shops to keep provocative images out of the sight of children have given a Wallington shop the thumbs-up.
Parents' group Carshalton Mums has been calling for newsagents and supermarkets to keep newspapers and magazines with sexual images on the front, including so-called 'lads' mags' like Nuts and Zoo and newspapers including the Daily Sport, out of the sight of young children.
The campaign, which has been backed by Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake, has now had success as J&G Newsagents in Beddington Gardens has become the first in the area to sign up for the Family Friendly Shops scheme launched by Carshalton Mums.
Now the group hopes to see more shops in the area signing up to the scheme. Kathy McGuinness, founder of Carshalton Mums, said: "We are delighted to be launching the Family Friendly Shops scheme with our MP Tom Brake.
"Making our local shops safe for children is an important step towards making our community more family friendly and we are really pleased to be working with local retailers and businesses to achieve this."
Mr Brake added: "As an MP I have met many local parents who expressed their concern at the amount of soft pornography that has crept into our newsagents. Many of them say how helpless they feel, unable to protect their children from the ever-present sexually explicit images."
"This is why I have teamed up with Kathy McGuinness and launched a campaign to stop inappropriate contents being displayed in children’s view. I hope that every local newsagent signs up to the pledge and help to protect our children from offensive material."
