The great and the good have come out in praise of Laura Robson after her first round domination of the number 10 seed on Tuesday – but the teenager is playing it down.
Virginia Wade, the last British woman to win the women’s singles crown in 1977, said: “I can’t help feeling she can do something incredible in this tournament.
"That [win over Kirilenko] was mature and more. She is beginning to realise the potential we see in her.”
In response, Robson said: “Virginia always gets excited, doesn’t she? I’d love to win a couple more matches but I don’t want to get ahead of myself.
“Mariana is going to be tough, so I am just focusing on that.”
Robson’s silver medal Olympic doubles partner Andy Murray said: “The most important thing is that she keeps working hard, setting goals and trying to improve.
“It can be difficult at the start of your career because if you have a good year, players start to take notice of you, and they will work on better tactics and ways to play against you.
“Maybe that’s why she has not played as well this year. But she’s young and she has time on her side, she just needs to keep on improving.”
