Police officers launched an operation to clampdown on unwanted sexual behaviour on public transport.

The operation, named Project Guardian, saw officers patrol Clapham Junction and Wimbledon stations.

Officers from the British Transport Police (BTP) and the Metropolitan Police Service also patrolled the London Overground between Wandsworth Road and Surrey Quays.

The London wide operation involved 185 plain clothed and uniformed officers stepping up patrols from July 22 to July 27.

A total of nine people were arrested across the capital for sexual offences.

The operation followed results from a Transport for London (TfL) survey which found 15 per cent of women experienced unwanted sexual behaviour on the network.

Police are aiming to increase awareness and raise confidence among the public to report it.

Superintendent Nick Watson, of BTP, said: "We want London’s transport network to be free from any kind of unwanted sexual behaviour.

"This project is about giving victims the confidence to come forward and talk to us, no matter how minor they think the offence has been, so that we can support them and target offenders."

Anyone who wants to report unwanted sexual behaviour can call 0800 40 50 40 or text 61016.
