A champion athlete and university graduate has designed an innovative vibrating sports massager to aid exercise and recovery.

Tremayne Gilling, from Mitcham, is a 100m and 200m sprinter with dreams of Olympic glory in 2016.

Mr Gilling trains six days a week and is the son of former Olympic hurdler Lorna Boothe, also his trainer, and third cousin of Jamaican Olympian Herb McKinley.

The 23-year-old recently graduated with a degree in product design from Middlesex University and has unveiled his first design - the SMRT.

The massage device prepares the muscles for exercise, improves the range of movement, relaxes muscles post activity and encourages recovery through a combination of kneading with nodules on the surface of the roller, and vibration to increase the blood flow.

He said: "Being a sportsman, injuries are a very common occurrence, so designing a product that helps prevent injuries or aids the muscles recover is something that interested me.

"After training I usually go to the gym and use the foam roller on top of the power plate.

"I wanted to combine the two concepts in a new product that works in a similar way with the same outcome, while also being portable."

The former Croydon College student hopes to further develop his product and attract further investment to bring it to the market in the future.
