Over half of people treated in Croydon University Hospital's Accident and Emergency department are "extremely likely" to recommend the department to a friend.

As part of the national Friends and Family Test (FFT), patients were asked whether they would recommend the hospital's ward or A&E department if they needed similar care.

Patients were asked the question as they left hospital, with six possible responses ranging from "extremely likely" to "extremely unlikely."

Of the 335 responses received about A&E, 15 people said "unlikely" or "extremely unlikely".

Nine people said they did not know and 17 patients said they were neither "extremely likely or extremely unlikely" to recommend the department to a loved one.

The same question was asked of in-patients leaving wards and 544 patients responded and the majority - 304 patients - chose 'extremely likely', with 179 choosing 'likely'.

Sixteen people responded 'neither', while 20 said a recommendation was either 'unlikely' or 'extremely unlikely'. Twenty-five people said they 'didn't know.'

The hospital received an overall score of 45 in the system which ranks hospitals from -100 to 100.

Zoe Packman, director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals, said: "We have been asking patients about the care and treatment they receive at the hospital since 2010, via our 'Just A Minute cards'.

"FFT allows us to build on this, so we can understand better what we are doing well and how we can improve further."

The FFT response rate for June was above the 15 per cent minimum national requirement at 19.8 per cent.

The hospital's chief executive, John Goulston, said: "Delivering consistent, high quality compassionate care, means meeting national standards and most importantly asking patients and staff what more can be done.

"FTT is one way we can do this, because it allows us to both hear and act on patient feedback."
