I discovered with some dismay in the Sutton Guardian article, (Chairman makes urgent plea to save St Raphael's Hospice), that the Coalition government only funds a quarter of the amount needed for this essential service.
St Raphael's, with volunteers in the hundreds embodies the 'Big Society' ideal that this Government put so much PR into promoting, nurses the dying and the very sick with great care and love, yet this same Government funds it very meanly.
But my dismay didn't end there. The same day a flyer was delivered by the local Conservative Party.
Clearly running a little late, it was dated: 'Spring 2013'. Its lead piece was titled 'SAVE ST HELIER'.
I have had similar flyers from the Liberal Democrats. It strikes me that these flyers represent the height of hypocrisy.
Policies of and actions taken by the present government, a coalition of Conservatives and Liberal-Democrats, are precisely what threatens the closure of St Helier's A&E and Maternity units.
