Young people got a chance to become film makers as part of a summer project.

Thirty young people attended a creative based two-week workshop to gain experience in various art forms including music and film.

Organised by Prodigal Love and Inside Out, the ‘Step Up!’ initiative aimed to help young people, some who were from troubled backgrounds.

The focus was on art, film and music, in a bid to engage the participants and support them in their growth as well-balanced independent young adults.

Activities included, making a film, sculpting, painting and attending workshops run by singers and rappers.

Participants who attended the workshop at Winterbourne Youth Club, Thornton Heath, were awarded the Bronze Level Art Award, to mark their dedication to the workshop which ended on Friday.

Funded by the Croydon Council, the sessions were run by industry experts including Andrew David of independent film and video production company Methodworks Production and David "TrebleZ" Powell of GL Records.

Talks were also held by guest speakers including Art Is the Cure CEO Rich Simmons.

Kristel Campbell, Managing Director of Prodigal Love, said: "These are young people who have their own issues, such as homelessness and a risk to offend. But they have improved and have grown from strength to strength.

"Parents are really pleased and although this is the project’s first year we want to do it again."
