A six-week consultation into plans to improve Wellesley Road has opened, with the public invited to comment on the council’s £4.3m proposals.

Proposed plans include two new crossings; one between Lansdowne Road and the Whitgift Centre entrance and another between Bedford Park and Poplar Walk.

The plans also involve filling in the existing subways at locations as well as new lighting and improved signage.

The project is part of the wider £53m Connected Croydon programme, including public realm projects and transport developments, the scheme aims to change Croydon’s town centre into a more pedestrian friendly area.

New crossings over the Croydon Flyover and outside the Fairfield Halls were finished earlier this year.

Councillor Jason Perry, cabinet member for planning, regeneration and transport, said: “I’m pleased to see how the first phase of investment in the Wellesley Road corridor is already starting to make this one of the Mayor of London’s Great Spaces.

"The new crossings on Park Lane and the flyover make a huge difference to both pedestrians and cyclists.

“These latest proposals will make further significant improvements. They’ll civilize the street whilst keeping traffic flowing and the new crossings will stitch together the town centre and properly link the shops to East Croydon Station."

The public have until the September 23 to give feedback on the proposed plans and feedback can be sent to tom.sweeney@croydon.gov.uk, 0208 726 6000 ext: 62575
