It was a rain and fun-filled day for the ever-popular West End Summer Show.

The traditional show returned this year with entertainment and attractions for all the family at West End Park, in West End Lane, Esher, on Saturday, August 24.

In the main marquee, 140 classes covering vegetables, flower arranging, cookery and photography were on offer, as well as an arts and crafts section with stalls selling a range of materials.

Exposed to the elements, traditional village show events and attractions went on, including children’s sports, Young’s horse rides, dunk the damsel, smash-a-plate and Punch and Judy.

Brave riders also had a go at staying in the saddle of a bucking bronco for as long as possible.

A firm favourite at last year’s show, the dog show, courtesy of the Kennel Club, returned once again to find the best dogs in the borough, including those with the waggiest tail and the best veteran.

A silver band and the Stagecoach Dance and Theatre school entertained the crowds who came despite the wet weather and the bi-annual classic cars display also drew in visitors.

Donald Mungall, chairman of the show, said: “It was rain the whole day so of course the outside was less popular for obvious reasons but I was quite impressed by the amount of people that turned up.

“The band and Stagecoach choir sung inside the marquee instead of out so overall we had a successful day.

“We almost had a soggy doggy class for the dog show, which had about 40 entrants.

“People were still very supportive and thanked us for putting the show on anyway.”

Mr Mungall said he hoped for better weather next year, when the show will mark its 60th anniversary.
