A 26-year-old man has been sectioned under the mental health act after a bomb scare at a Sutton town centre post office.

Police were called to the post office in the St Nicholas Centre at 5.30pm on Wednesday, August 21, after reports of a suspect package.

The area was evacuated and cordoned of for 90 minutes while police investigated.

The package turned out not to be dangerous and a 26-year-old Sutton man has subsequently been sectioned and remains in a secure facility.

Sutton town centre worker Jason Hughes said: "Needless to say, it  was a bit of a surprise when the officer told me there was a 'suspect package' in Sutton High Street because it seemed so incredible.

"I'm very relieved that nothing happened in the end, but it does remind you that you need to keep your eyes open and report anything suspicious.

"All credit to the police, they had it all under control."
