This weekend is people's last chance to claim free grit through Sutton Council.
Well-prepared people have claimed nearly 25 tonnes of free grit over the last four weekends and this weekend is the final opportunity for people to pick up their share.
Every household in the borough is entitled to 10kg of free grit in a scheme the council has run for the last four years. The grit can be used on footpaths around their homes and the pavements and roads in front of their properties as colder weather takes hold.
Councillor Jill Whitehead, the chairman of Sutton Council's environment and neighbourhoods committee, said: "As we’ve seen again this scheme is proving very popular and we are extremely pleased that so many people are coming forward to claim their grit for the winter.
"This is a practical, value-for-money solution to a problem and exemplifies the Sutton way of people helping each other out to get things done.
"Council gritters will be on hand to do main roads, bus routes and roads around hospitals, GP surgeries and schools when required, but it is impossible for them to reach everywhere."
Free grit is available from B&Q in Carshalton Road, Sutton, Woodcote Green Garden Centre & Nurseries in Woodmansterne Lane, Kimpton Park Way Reuse and Recycling Centre and The Mount in Clockhouse. Visitors to Kimpton Park Way will have to bring their own container for the grit.
Only one bag of grit is available per household and people must bring a council tax or utility bill to prove they live in the borough. Anyone who wants to collect on their friend or neighbour's behalf will have to bring one of their bills too.
