A Kingston mother has been named Ultimate Women’s Warrior of the Year at the Cosmopolitan Women Awards this month.
Sarbjit Kaur Athwal, 42, won the real life award for her bravery after becoming the first person to give evidence in an open court for an “honour killing” trial.
She was awarded the gong at a star studded event attended by celebrities such as X Factor winners Little Mix and singer Ellie Goulding on December 5.
Ms Athwal played an active role in bringing justice to the family members who arranged the murder of her sister-in-law Surjit Athwal who was drugged, drowned and murdered in India after she became “too western”.
Ms Athwal who is now divorced, works as an English tutor for Learn English and volunteers at the Metropolitan Police Football Club in East Molesey.
She was also awarded the Best magazine Bravest Woman award last month.
