The polling stations are open and thousands of residents across the borough are preparing to cast their vote and decide who will take Merton forward over the next four years.
Labour currently hold minority control of the borough after squeaking home ahead of the Conservatives with 28 seats to 27 in 2010.
Merton Park Independents won three seats and two Liberal Democrat candidates were elected.
Since then friction within the Conservative party saw former leader Richard Hilton defect to UKIP alongside councillors Suzanne Evans, and Rod Scott with three others becoming independents last May. Councillor Chris Edge later returned to the Conservative fold but is not be running today.
Adding to the mix is the Green Party, Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition and new parties the Mitcham Independent Party and the Keep Our St Helier Hospital Party.
Don't forget the European Elections are also taking place today, as we elect those who will represent our interests with in the EU.
All registered voters shoud have received a polling card with the address of the station they should attend.
Polling stations opened at 7am and close at 10pm. Follow the count right here with reporter Louisa Clarence Smith who will be reporting live from Canons Leisure Centre, Mitcham throughout the night.
