A Kingston University lecturer will stand for UKIP in next year's general election.
Pharmacy and chemistry principal lecturer doctor Nicholas Wood will stand for the Esher and Walton constituency in May.
The seat has traditionally been Conservative and is currently held by MP Dominic Raab.
James Berry, Conservative prospective parliamentary candidate for Kingston and Richmond, said: "I know that many Kingston University students strongly disagree with UKIP, but I'm sure that students’ overriding political belief is a belief in democracy.
"I can understand why students are disappointed that one of their lecturers has decided to stand for UKIP in Esher and Walton but that is part of the democratic process.
"By far the most effective way to respond would be to get out there and help the excellent local Conservative MP Dominic Raab stop UKIP making any headway in Esher and Walton."
Another Kingston University lecturer, Rupa Huq, will be stand for Labour in the Ealing Central and Acton constituency.
A spokeswoman from Kingston University said: "Kingston University has more than 21,000 students and 2,500 staff encompassing a wide range of political and religious views and beliefs.
"As a centre of learning and education, it is committed to protecting freedom of speech, within the law, and to stimulating academic debate.
"The right to express individual views is encouraged by the university but it does not tolerate behaviour from any member of the university community that might be construed as incitement to any form of discrimination, harassment or hatred."
