Aaron Wickham might have bagged a debut winner, but Billy Dunn claimed the manager’s plaudits as struggling Walton Casuals performed a smash and grab raid at Worthing on Saturday, writes Stuart Amos.
The Stags came from 1-0 down to win 2-1 at the Ryman Division One South play-off chasers, through a second half Scott Day strike and Wickham’s deflected injury time effort.
Former Sutton United striker Dunn came off the bench to set up both goals much to the delight of player manager Liam Collins.
“The changes we made in the second half made a real difference. Billy came on and changed the game to be fair,” he said.
“That is what he can do. On his day he can win you a game on his own.
“We rode our luck at times, but we showed character to get the three points.”
He added: “Now we have to show some consistency.
“We are out of the relegation zone, but it is tight down there.
“We have proved we can mix it with the best in this league by winning at Worthing, but our downfall is losing games like the one at home to Horsham, who are bottom of the league.
“Consistency is going to be key to staying in this league and a couple of wins can put us up to mid-table.”
In the same, division, Walton & Hersham were thrashed 6-2 at home by Folkestone Invicta to drop into the relegation mire.
Meanwhile, Met Police remained in the Ryman Premier League play-off places despite a 1-0 defeat at Enfield Town on Saturday.
