Corinthian Casuals boss Matt Howard has labelled keeper Danny Bracken the best in Ryman Division One South – and it is not hard to see why, writes Stuart Amos.
The shotstopper defied a team scoring close to three goals per game in the league this term to keep a cleansheet as Casuals beat Faversham Town 1-0 on Saturday.
Bracken then saved three penalties and scored one himself as Casuals beat League Two AFC Wimbledon’s academy side 4-3 in a shoot-out – after a 0-0 draw – to reach the London Senior Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday.
“That’s 180 minutes without conceding a goal,” said Howard.
“Apart from the world-class save Danny made on Saturday against Faversham, he hasn’t really had a save to make.
“That’s credit to him as he’s organising his back four better.
“Why’s he the best goalkeeper in the league? He hasn’t had a save to make, but when he’s called upon, he makes it.”
Casuals are unbeaten since returning from their recent tour to Brazil and Howard puts it down to a renewed sense of purpose and belief.
“The penny's dropped with the boys," added the manager, who takes his team to Three Bridges on Saturday.
"They've bought into how we started the season.
"Perhaps we all got a little carried away with being top of the league at one stage. They took things too easy and moved away from what got us there in the first place.
"The Brazil trip was good because I had a lot of time with the players - practically living with them for a week.
"I had the chance to really talk to them, address a few things and I think they’ve now bought back into the idea of what got us to where we were.
"The way we played in Brazil against Paulista is the way we started the season. We all knew our jobs defensively.
"We’ve thought ‘if we can do it against them, we can do it against anyone’.”
