A club which enables people with disabilities to enjoy cycling has won an award just two years after being set up.

Surrey Wheels For All, which has one of its bases in the Harrier Centre in Ewell, has been voted Decathlon Cycling Club of the Year and awarded £500 to spend on equipment.

The club, which caters for those with disabilities aged five to 89, was set up in 2012 as a children’s group with funding and support from Surrey County Council.

It has gone from strength to strength.

With its adapted bikes, the project can cater for people with reduced or impaired physical or mental ability.

Matthew Wing, the charity’s coordinator, said: "Surrey Wheels for All is a relatively new club, however, we have gained some great support from parents, carers, volunteers and partners, who just long to see their child enjoy an activity that many people can often take for granted.

"We are very proud to have been chosen as the Decathlon Cycling Club of the Year and will certainly celebrate in style."

A spokesman for the club added: "The benefits of cycling are the same for everyone, regardless of physical ability or condition.

"It is fun, healthy and enables people to get around effectively and sustainably.

"The benefits of cycling may even be magnified in those with disabilities and health problems, as there may be fewer other opportunities for exercise and mobility.

"With adaptations to bicycles and riding technique, cycling can also be enjoyed by people with a wide range of disabilities."
