A man in his 60s died last night after having a heart attack at the wheel and crashing into a building in a horse stable yard.

The accident happened on Chantilly Way, near the junction with Hook Road, Epsom - at Horton Farm Livery Stables - at 7.30pm, when the man was travelling from the Epsom direction along Hook Road.

Paramedics administered CPR and found a pulse for the 62-year-old man nearly half an hour after he crashed into a building.

But he later died.

An employee at the stables told the Epsom Guardian that the man's wife was sitting in the passenger seat of the car, a blue Mercedes, at the time of the crash, but she was uninjured.

He said the car crashed through a wall and into a small shed and was recovered by police last night.

Mark Stewart, Epsom fire station's blue watch commander, said: "The man in the vehicle was driving and had a heart attack.

"He came through the traffic lights and went straight across the road into hedges and took out a gate.

"He went through it, into the yard of the stables. He went into a building and came to a stop."

A spokesman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said an ambulance, air ambulance and paramedics in a number of cars were sent to the crash.

A white tent was also spotted at the site.

On its Facebook page this morning, Epsom and Ewell police dismissed suggestions that the air ambulance was a police helicopter circling over Epsom because of a shooting.

It said: "For those who want to know as to why there was a helicopter out over Chantilly Way last night, it was in relation to a car accident where the driver had a cardiac arrest and sadly died.

"Thoughts are with family and friends at this time.

"Would like to make it clear that there is nothing suspicious and there is definitely no shooting involved. Amazing how rumours start."

The employee at the stables said no liveries with horses were at the site of the car crash at the time.

He added: "It is one of those things that won't happen again in a million years.

"It was just a real accident."

Anyone with any information about the crash should call the police on 101, or report it online by clicking here, quoting the reference number P15062894.
