Hampton School footballer Calogero Scannella would have been forgiven for feeling like he was kind of a big deal in the classroom last week.

Scannella, cheered on by coach loads of Hampton students bused up to the midlands for the match, hit a hat-trick as the school’s U15s lifted the Independent Schools’ U15 Investec Cup at Burton Albion FC last Thursday, with a thrilling 3-2 extra-time triumph over Manchester Grammar School.

The teenager put his side 2-0 up only to watch their rivals level matters to take things into extra-time, in which Scannella claimed the win and the match ball with his decisive third goal.

Hampton’s U18s could not do the double on Monday – as the teams had done in 2012 – as they were beaten 4-1 by Ardingley College in the final of their age category at the home of League One Milton Keynes Dons.

Hampton School headmaster Kevin Knibbs said: "I am delighted that the boys and their coaches have been rewarded for their magnificent efforts over the season with this prestigious national trophy.

"Our squad gave everything they had and everyone at Hampton is immensely proud of them."

Meanwhile, Lady Eleanor Holles School’s U15 lacrosse team claimed school bragging rights as they were crown national schools’ champions at the Surrey Sports Park in Guildford last week.

The U15 girls, captained by Cecily Green  and Emma Doherty beat St Catherine’s School 3-2 in the final having beaten Guildford High School and Putney High School on their way to the final.

Both the U19 and U14 teams were beaten finalists in their age groups.
