If Met Police lift the Surrey Senior Cup and miss out on the Ryman Premier League play-offs, boss Jimmy Cooper will still be a happy man.
Goals from Charlie Collins – a penalty – and Joe Turner, right, landed a 2-1 semi-final triumph over Molesey on Tuesday night to set up a final date with Merstham at Conference Premier club Woking.
The Blues had been in pole position for a top five league finish but have stuttered since Christmas and Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Kingstonian saw them slip to seventh in the table.
Cooper has been frustrated by his side’s dip in form and is still hunting some fresh faces before the transfer deadline at the end of this month.
He has decided to largely keep faith with his current squad, having threatened a clearout should they fail to overcome Ks.
But if the shake up does not work and the Blues do claim silverware, the Imber Court chief has insisted it would be a massive achievement.
“It would be disappointing to miss out on the play-offs having been there or thereabouts for so long,” he said.
“I’m going to stick by the players because they are the ones who have got us there an d I have seen some green shoots of recovery in the last few games.
“Any point is a good point against Kingstonian because they are a good side. The draw keeps us three points ahead of them and our goal difference is much better.”
He added: “To win the Surrey Senior Cup would be a massive achievement for a club like ours.
“We got stuffed in the final by Woking last year and to get there again is a fantastic effort.
“It is a big competition for teams at our level and we take it very seriously each year.
“Hopefully, we can go one step further this time.”
Met Police face another crunch trip to Bognor Regis Town on Saturday, knowing their hosts are only three points behind them in the table.
