Merton Council run a number of green initiatives, from recycling from homes, flats and schools, to sustainable planning and greener transport issues.

Over the past year, they have introduced wind turbines on the roof of the Civic building in Morden and have increased their recycling rate from 23% to 25% and rising.

The Environmental Development team offer schools a range of education programmes around recycling and waste minimisation, and the annual Good Going campaign promotes sustainable transport and travel awareness initiatives to local school children. In the coming months we will be completing our roll-out to all the block of flats with 10 or more properties and also completing our Neighbourhood Recycling refurbishment, to include the collection of plastic bottles, and combining the three colours of glass into one mixed glass collection - making it altogether easier for residents to drop off their excess recyclables. This year we also introduced the Merton Rule a groundbreaking planning policy, which requires the use of renewable energy onsite to reduce annual carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the built environment.
