The deputy leader of Sutton's Conservative group has been stripped of his post after admitting he does not recycle because he is too busy.
Councillor Peter Geiringer claimed that due to all of the committee meetings he attends he does not have time to recycle his waste.
Following this admission, Conservative group leader Eleanor Pinfold removed him from his position prior to a group meeting on February 26. He will continue to be a councillor for the Belmont ward.
Coun Pinfold said: "Peter has accepted he made a mistake on this and that recycling is a major issue in this borough. He is an excellent local councillor and has served the community well for the last 26 years and will continue to serve his residents in Belmont Ward with the same dedication as he has always done.
"Recycling and environmental issues are important to all of us and it is incumbent on everyone to do their bit to combat the changes to our planet."
Conservative lead councillor for waste management John Kennedy stressed that the environment is an important issue for the party.
He said: "The Conservatives back Sutton's attempts to recycle and promote a green agenda, which has has cross-party support. Councillors are expected to support and promote the policy."
Sutton Council deputy leader and lead councillor for the environment Colin Hall expressed his disappointment at Coun Geiringer's confession. He said: "Sutton Council is committed to working with local residents to achieve a high level of recycling and local councillors must also do their bit. It is unfortunate that Councillor Geiringer chose not to embrace that role."
A new Conservative deputy leader will be elected and announced in the next two weeks. Coun Geiringer was unavailable for comment.
