A die-hard football fan from Croydon, who named his son after Millwall FC's home ground, said his new-born boy will be dropped off at Barnardos if he grows up a Crystal Palace fan.

Mike Bloomfield, 58, registered his new-born under the name Bermondsey Millwall Den Bloomfield at Croydon Civic Centre last week BEFORE consulting with his wife.

The proud dad will defiantly bring up the child in their home no more than 400 yards from Crystal Palace’s Selhurst Park.

He said: “He’ll be dropped outside Barnardos if he grows up a Palace fan.”

Friends of Mike who support rivals Crystal Palace saw the funny side but said they will call him Dave instead, whereas his wife, Kellie Bloomfield, was left speechless.

Mr Bloomfield said: "I got the cold shoulder for a couple of days.

“She’s still a bit sore about it but she is starting to come round to the idea.”

The baby’s forename and birth-place of his father, Bermondsey, was inspired by David Beckham’s decision to name his son Brooklyn.

He said: “If Beckham can name his son Brooklyn, I don’t see why I can’t call mine Bermondsey.”

Bermondsey, whose arrival was unexpected, was to be named Houdini after the famous illusionist Harry Houdini, but Mike said he “thought better of it.”

Bermondsey is not the first family member to be named with the south London football club in mind.

The Bloomfield’s bulldog, pictured, is named Kitchener, after ex Millwall star, Barry Kitchener.

The newest edition to the Millwall fan-club is set to attend his first game at The Den this weekend, where Millwall play Colchester.
