A Croydon school is set to host a major exhibition on the First World War.
Whitgift School in South Croydon will unveil its Remembering 1916 – A Life on the Western Front showcase on March 12, featuring never-seen-before artefacts from the mid-point of the conflict.
Among the 500 exhibits are an original sign from Verdun railway station, a rare edition of the Wipers Times trench newspapers, recruitment posters, a German field wagon and a WRAF uniform.
A new display and research will shed light on the flights and ‘kills’ of the Red Baron, while parts of his triplane can be seen.
Whitgift’s headmaster and exhibition director Dr Christopher Barnett said: “We are very excited at being able to present such a comprehensive collection of original items, which will help to bring people closer to how three countries experienced and endured the war.
“We are also very confident that the exhibition will increase our understanding of the War and its effect across three countries. It will be a great pleasure for Whitgift to host another momentous exhibition; we look forward to welcoming young and old over the course of the six months.”
Remember 1916 is open to visitors seven days a week from 10am to 5pm from March 12 to August 31. Entry costs £7 adults, £5 seniors and £3 children under 16. Under fives go free and family tickets are available for £18. Go to remembering1916.co.uk or call 020 8688 9222.
