An octogenarian conductor from Kingston will conduct the music he wants played at his funeral at his next concert.
But John Bate, who recently turned 80, insists Maurice Durufle’s Requiem at Southwark Cathedral on June 11 will not be his swansong.
He said: “I intend to carry on as long as my constitution allows.”
The veteran baton man is still going strong with weekly rehearsals at the Thames Philharmonic Choir, which he founded more than half a century ago.
The programme for the concert in Southwark also includes Mozart’s Vasperae Solennes de Confessore and Poulenc’s Organ Concerto.
Tickets cost from £8. Go to thamesphilchoir.org.uk or call 07522 524081.
