A Croydon headmistress got a pleasant shock last week when her school pupils presented her with surprise leaving presents.

Year six pupils at St David's School in Purley wrote songs and produced a CD to raise money for the school's new music department.

They also recorded songs at a professional studio with the help of one of the parents and filmed the project.

Unbeknown to headmistress Lindsay Nash - who is retiring from her leading role at the school this year - the video also contained a special leaving song dedicated to her and her hard work.

The lyrics to the song were written by pupils, while the melody was composed by music teacher, June George.

Mike Connaris, who has two children at St David's, said: "I was amazed when I heard the songs and was very pleased to be involved."
