An East Croydon pizza shop has been given a one-out-of-five food hygiene score after inspectors found it was selling turkey as ham.

Regina Pizza, in Lower Addiscombe Road, underwent a food hygiene inspection by Croydon Council officers, who found that "major improvement was necessary."

The inspection report stated: "Your menu does not comply.

"You cannot call 'ham' on the menu as it is 'turkey'.

"Same with pepperoni and salami - you must include type of meat."

The pizza shop was also criticised, among other things, for storing onions under the sink and because food handlers had no training in food safety, and also because the cold water tap on the wash hand basin didn't work.

The information was obtained by the Croydon Guardian following a freedom of information request.

Despite several attempts for a comment, nobody from the restaurant was available.

The rating for the restaurant is made up of three main areas; Hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of facilities, and building and management of food safety.

The inspector found that the first two area were both "generally satisfactory," but for food safety that "major improvement" was necessary.

The inspection was carried out in July this year.
