These are the three shortlisted options for the new tramlink extension being proposed from Wimbledon to Sutton.

Christened the ‘Sutton Link’, it’s expected that work to build the new line would start in 2022 before being completed three years later.

Option one (green) involves converting the existing Thameslink rail line to a tram.

This will involve changing power supply, from third rail to overhead electrification, modifying platforms, and improving access to stations – including step-free access.

Moreover, works will be required at Wimbledon station to allow the “curtailment” of Thameslink services.

Options two (yellow) and three (red) would both run “mostly on-street”, and a loop route serving St Helier Hospital could also be provided in either one.

They also include bus rapid transit, which bosses hope to achieve the same as a tram to implement but at a reduced cost – though they concede it will have higher operating fees than a tram.

The first proposed route runs from Sutton to Wimbledon, the second to South Wimbledon, and the third to Colliers Wood.

Transport for London (TfL) has backed the project with £70 million while Merton and Sutton councils have pumped a further £30 million split between them.

The shortlisted options were revealed at a Sutton Local Committee meeting on September 6 as they were informed on the latest developments.

In October, a public consultation will be run for eight weeks.
