A father returned home from work to find his troubled son had hanged himself from a loft hatch at their home in Carshalton, an inquest was told this week.
Robert Wright, a care worker with Mencap, had left a note saying "I'm sorry. That's all I can say," before his suicide on July 15.
Croydon Coroner's Court heard how his father Hugh had been working at a computer with Robert the previous evening.
Mr Wright, of Warnham Court Road, said his son had previously suffered from depression and schizophrenia but that"everything seemed absolutely normal" when he left for work.
Dr Peter Wilkins, a pathologist, told the court there was a small amount of alcohol in the body, as well as a trace of cannabis and some prescribed drugs.
Recording a verdict that Robert had killed himself when his judgement was impaired, coroner Dr Roy Palmer said: "I am satisfied he had the necessary intention to take his own life."
