Students across England returned to school this morning following months of remote learning.
For some time, schools and education settings across the UK have been preparing for the reopening to provide safe learning environments.
Sutton Council confirmed preparations included the roll out of testing for secondary and college pupils, ongoing testing for staff in all early years, primary and secondary settings and the return of wraparound childcare for primary and secondary pupils.
Two headteachers have said they have been looking forward to the return as there is "no substitute" for face to face support.
Nathan Cole, Headmaster at Wilson’s School and Chair of Secondary Heads’ Board and Emma Walford, Head Teacher of Hackbridge Primary and Chair of Primary Heads’ Board said:
“Schools across Sutton have worked incredibly hard to provide high quality provision for those at home, whilst simultaneously supporting those children in school since January.
"However, there is no substitute for face to face support and we are so looking forward to welcoming back children of all ages to school from 8th March.
"As has been the case since March of 2020 schools will implement the control measures required by the Government, including the roll out of LFD testing to keep everyone safe.
"School leaders salute their staff and also wish to thank parents for their encouragement and support at what has been a very challenging time for them.
"We know the children will be excited about seeing their friends and it will be a delight for us to hear the playgrounds buzz with fun and games once more.”
Councillor Marian James, Chair of Sutton Council's People Committee said: "The news regarding a date for pupils to return to school is a positive step forward.
"We have seen more and more residents take up the vaccine and infection rates in Sutton are declining.
"Although the challenge is still great I am hopeful that this move marks the turning of a corner for our community.
"On behalf of the Council, I wanted to send my deepest thanks to all of the staff and support staff at schools and education settings who have worked tirelessly throughout this period.
"Whether it was providing socially distanced lessons and support to pupils, or online learning, there are hundreds of examples of ingenuity and resilience which is a glowing example of what makes Sutton so special.
"We all hope the return will have a positive impact on the learning, mental and physical wellbeing of our children and young people."
The Government will review the position at Easter as part of the roadmap outlined by the Prime Minister.
