On Episode Four of The South London News Podcast, Hosts Monica Charsley and Orlando Jenkinson discuss some of their favourite stories from June.
With Covid-19 restrictions continuing to ease in south London, sport has returned to our pitches and living rooms alike. This episode was recorded 24 hours after England’s historic win against Germany at the Euros, and we look at a historical repeat of one of England’s previous matches versus Scotland that was held at Richmond Park in 1893 and included a barefooted princess sprinting down the touchline.
Also discussed are the ongoing Wimbledon tennis Grand Slam, with full capacity crowds being trialled at the All England Club for the finals. Sutton has a representative at the tournament in the form of local tennis hero Jack Draper, who was described as a “natural-born fighter”.
Meanwhile, we highlight the efforts of a refugee from Croydon who set up a scholarship program with south London universities to help get survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire free places to study at universities.
Finally we take a look at the fine art world, with an interview with a pair in Wandsworth who opened their own art gallery after receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback when displaying their friends’ art pieces in a vacant building’s window.
And similarly in Richmond, two artists collaborated with the London Wetlands Centre in Barnes for a residency during a Covid-related lockdown to produce some stunning individual and joint artworks now on show in a free exhibition that runs until August 31 at the centre.
