Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock said his team had to get back to basics after Shaun Derry's error cost them all three points against Southampton on Saturday.

Derry's misplaced pass on the edge of his own box allowed Andrew Surman to run and cross for Stern John to equalise five minutes from time and earn The Saints a 1-1 draw.

James Scowcroft had earlier put The Eagles ahead twenty minutes from time, but it was the defensive errors that Warnock highlighted after the game.

He said: "We got punished with an elementary defensive error from Shaun Derry, one of our more experienced players. It was disappointing really, put it in the stands and they can't score a goal from it.

"That's two games we have thrown away by elementary defending really so we've just got to get back to basics over the next few games."

In a first half of few chances, Southampton came closest to scoring when Bradley Wright-Philips shot wide from John's layback.

Palace's best chance fell to Ben Watson, but Surman blocked his 12-yard shot after good work from Sean Scannell down the right.

On the hour, Warnock made a double substitution bringing on Dougie Freedman and new-boy Neil Danns for Clinton Morrison and Tom Soares.

And it was the debutant who set up the opening goal, winning a header on the edge of the box, which Scowcroft controlled and shot home on the turn from 12 yards.

Palace then had chances to double their lead as Watson's free-kick missed Mark Hudson's outstretched foot and came back off the post.

Less than a minute later the midfielder was denied again by a brilliant save from Kelvin Davis, who tipped his 25-yard drive onto the crossbar.

The Eagles were made to pay for those misses though when John equalised, and Warnock was disappointed not to take the three points.

He said: "I thought we were the ones who were going to win it, they had a bit more quality passing across midfield but I didn't see them scoring.

"We had the best chances to win the game, particularly the two from Watson."

Warnock also had a word to say about referee Mark Halsey after Andrew Davies appeared to manhandle Scowcroft in the first half.

He said: "The way Davies mauled Scowcroft with both hands around his neck when he was going for a free header was a clear penalty, but we don't seem to get any decisions at the minute."
