Croydon Athletic boss Jerry Scola has tipped striker Reggie Savage to go on a goal spree after the forward ended his barren run on Saturday, writes Simon Fitzjohn.

Savage, who fired 16 goals in the first four months of the season, had endured a drought since returning from unsuccessful loan spells at AFC Wimbledon and Bromley.

And Scola is convinced his free-scoring frontman will fire the Rams back up the Ryman Division One South table.

Scola said: "Since he has been back with us, his goals have really dried up.

"He went away full of confidence thinking he was off to bigger and better things.

"But he was only really used as cover and he has come back to us dejected.

"We have stuck with him, though. I think now he has got one, the floodgates will open."

Croydon's 2-0 win over Whyteleafe was their first in five games.

Moses Ademola added the second goal as Athletic ended an awful run in front of goal, having scored just once in their previous four games.

But Scola admitted his side had had a lucky escape.

He added: "They were by far the better team in the first half.

"We kept them at bay and then took our chances when they came. But it was not a great performance."

Croydon visit league leaders Dover Athletic on Saturday, and Scola revealed he would not be travelling with high hopes.

"I'm not expecting a great deal from the trip, if I am honest," he added. "Having said that, the pressure will be on them and I will be telling the boys to go out and try to enjoy themselves."
