A roofer who ripped off a Roehampton woman has been ordered to hand over almost £10,000 in compensation and legal costs.

Alan McCaffery, trading as Milestone Roofing & Building Specialists of Middle Lane, Teddington, was prosecuted by Wandsworth Council trading standards officers for making false claims about how much repair work he had done to the roof of the Danebury Avenue home.

McCaffery charged the homeowner for fixing sheets of plywood and three layers of roof felt after being called to fix a leak in 2005.

The total bill for the job came to £4,680.

But when the leak continued and McCaffery refused to fix it, the homeowner called another roofing firm.

When the second company inspected the roof, they told the homeowner only two layers of felt and no plywood had been used.

A trading standards core sample reinforced the finding, showing the building's five different roofs added since the building was constructed, and McCaffery's two layers of felt.

McCaffery admitted the offence under the Trade Descriptions Act at South Western Magistrates' Court.

He was fined £3,000 and ordered to pay the council's prosecution costs of £1,500.

He was also ordered to pay his victim £5,000 in compensation.
