Wallington police station has been earmarked for closure after being deemed unfit for purpose.
In a briefing document the station is described as being built for a previous era' with narrow corridors and small rooms.
Although no alternative accommodation has been found police chiefs have promised the new facility will be in the immediate locality'.
In a briefing document plans are set out to replace the station and re-provide all facilities to a more specialised and appropriate facility.
Speaking at the Sutton community and police forum last Thursday, Chief Inspector David Gair added opening hours will be unaffected, and may even lengthen.
"All the facilities in Wallington will continue to be provided in Wallington." he added.
Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake said the situation could be a win win.
"If they don't just close the station and do open up an improved station with the same or better facilities than already provided it could be a win win situation for everyone.
"The Wallington building is quite distinctive, and the issue of its future will be a separate issue from the police situation." he added.
The move forms part of a London wide asset management plan by the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) to ensure police accommodation is up to scratch.
Permanent accommodation is also being sought for all Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNTs) currently housed in temporary bases across the borough.
Information on plans, complete with a consultation form, can be found via cms.met.police.uk/met/boroughs/sutton/index.
A consultation period ends on February 17 and completed forms can be set to david.gair@met.police.uk or posted to FOA Ch Insp Gair, FREEPOST, Sutton Police Station, 6 Carshalton Road, Sutton SM1 4BR.
