Plans to redevelop Purley's Tesco have been put on hold.

The supermarket giant announced yesterday the cost of redeveloping the road layout meant their plans for the area would be halted.

Proposals included demolishing the current Purley Cross store and building a mammoth 139,000 sq ft store in its place.

It would also have seen the busy A22 Godstone Road rerouted.

The store had held a consultation exercise with residents last year.

Tesco spokesman James Wiggam said: "Naturally we are disappointed that, having sought to work with local residents as a partner in the redevelopment and regeneration of the Town Centre, we've had to take the decision to suspend our plans.

"We understand that many of our 50,000 weekly customers will be disappointed by this decision, and we will look to refresh the store to ensure an improved offer for customers in the coming months.

"I'd like to say a personal thank you to everyone who gave up their time to help with the consultation."
