A 100m exclusion zone was set up after a gas leak on the A22 in Kenley yesterday.
Fire fighters were called at about 6.10pm to reports of a strong smell at the Kenley gas holder.
A restriction area was set up for two hours, and local residents were warned to stay in their homes and keep away from the windows.
Watch manager Martin Winson-Hockley said: "Representatives from Transco arrived and identified a low pressure leak on the main road.
"We removed the restriction zone once we got the all clear."
He said the road closures caused major traffic delays.
