A man has died in a road crash involving a lorry and a car in Streatham.

The man, in his late 20s or early 30s, was driving a convertible silver MGF sports car, which was in collision with the lorry.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his passenger, a 22-year-old woman, was taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting with serious back and neck injuries. Her injuries are not life-threatening.

The accident happened in Leigham Court Road in Streatham at the junction with Ilex Way this morning.

A police spokesman said: "Initial reports suggest a silver MG car was travelling at speed southbound on Leigham Court Road.

"A lorry, travelling north, attempted to pass a stationery refuge collection lorry and the two vehicles collided."

Officers were called around 9.40am and the London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service attended. The driver of the lorry was not injured.

Leigham Court Road between Valleyfield Road and the A214 at Streatham Common North will remain closed until around 4pm while forensic examinations are carried out.

Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information should call the Met's Collision Investigation Unit at Hampton Traffic Garage on 0208 941 9011.

No arrests have been made.

The ambulance service was called by the fire service just after 9.40am. Two ambulances, two fast response cars and a doctor attended.

It is thought the road will remain closed into the early afternoon.
